A late-morning fire damaged the rural Great Bend residence of Lynn and Nancy Fryberger, 49 NW 48 Road.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office, which responded with the Great Bend Fire Department, reported a house guest called 911 at 11:46 a.m. after she noticed smoke.

Barbara Babcock and her husband, from Albany Georgia, were staying at the Fryberger home while they were in town for hunting. Barbara was the only one in the residence and was doing laundry at the time. Officials said she was on the couch when she heard a pop, got up and discovered the smoke. The garage and the west end and back of the house were damaged.

No damage estimate was available as the fire department was still investigating Wednesday afternoon.
