Weather permitting, work on the intersection of 24th and Main in Great Bend should begin this week, City Engineer Rob Winiecke said.
Bryant and Bryant Construction Inc. of Halstead is in the process of mobilizing and taking delivery of materials for the project, he said. Depending upon weather, the company expects traffic control and project staking (surveying) will begin this week with work commencing on the storm drain at the northeast corner of the intersection.
Once the drain is completed, estimated at four weeks, the contractor will place the new curb and gutter, and pavement expansion (northeast corner). Around the end of April, Venture Corporation of Great Bend will perform the mill and overlay work at the intersection.
Depending upon fabrication and delivery of the traffic signal poles, there may be a delay in construction activities for three or four weeks starting in April, Winiecke said. Once the poles arrive, it should take about a week to install them, again depending on the weather.
The project is quite extensive, the engineer said.
In addition, some of the current construction activity seen occurring at the intersection is a result of Kansas Gas Service relocating an existing gas line that is in conflict with the proposed storm drain improvements at the northeast corner.
As for vehicle flow, he said there may be some isolated lane closures. But, there shouldn’t be any serious traffic snags.
KDOT let the bids for the project and Bryant & Bryant were the low bidders.
The state is splitting the cost of the work with the city by paying $250,000. The city’s share is $216,000.
