Two youths playing with a lighter started a grass fire that damaged two trailer houses on Sunday, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano reported. Human activity also led to two fire calls on Saturday, although one was contained to a grill.
At 11:42 a.m. Sunday, units responded to 910 Ninth St. to a grass fire that was spreading under a trailer house. They found the grass on fire between the two trailer houses with fire under one of the trailers. The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before it caused some minor damage to both trailers.
Napolitano said the cause of the fire was two juveniles playing with a lighter that started some leaves on fire. The juveniles were unable to put the fire out so they went to their house and reported it to an adult, and 911 was called.
At 3:04 p.m. Saturday, units responded to a grass fire at 626 South U.S. 281. It was in a burn pit and vacant lot area. The owner of the property stated she had tried to dispose of a rug and when she placed in into the pit several other items caught on fire and caused the grass fire to burn out of control. The fire was quickly extinguished.
At 6:48 p.m. Saturday units responded to 1123 Stone St., where someone reported a fire on the front porch. They found flames coming from a charcoal grill on the porch with the homeowner standing beside it. The grill was moved off the porch to a safer area.
