A 1988 Dodge Dakota pickup that was stolen from Barton County around the same time law enforcement officers were searching for a fugitive has been recovered, Undersheriff Larry Holliday said. It was found Tuesday in Wichita.
The Barton County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the pickup, which was discovered missing last Friday, July 6, had been turned over to the Wichita Police Department for impoundment.
On Friday, authorities were searching the Cheyenne Bottoms area for Michael Aaron Jayne, wanted by U.S. Marshals and Oregon authorities for parole violation. A pickup stolen from Rooks County, where he was seen last Thursday, was found stuck in mud at the Bottoms Friday morning, about 4 miles from where the Dakota pickup was stolen from a Barton Hills residence.
Barton County authorities called off the area manhunt on Sunday, after federal authorities concluded Jayne had left the area.
Jayne, 30, is described as a white man, 5’10” tall and 180 pounds. He has brown eyes and blonde hair. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
