A brief high-speed pursuit Friday morning led to a Great Bend man’s arrest in northwestern Barton County.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving an anonymous tip on the whereabouts of Randy Dent, 41, who was wanted on outstanding warrants, and quickly locating the suspect vehicle on a road between Great Bend and Hoisington around 9 a.m.

A deputy pulled in behind the car to verify the identity of Dent and get the tag number, but when he attempted to make a stop, Dent drove off. After a brief chase, Dent lost control of the car in a road ditch in the 500 block of NW 130 Road. He then left the car and ran into a tree row.

Additional units from the BSCO and Kansas Highway Patrol arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter around the tree line, which was about half a mile long. KHP’s fixed-wing airplane was called in, along with Barton County’s K-9 unit. Dent was tracked to some undergrowth where he was hiding, approximately 500 yards west of where he had been seen last.

He was booked on outstanding warrants for parole violation and possession of anhydrous with intent to use, along with new charges of fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer and reckless driving.
