LARNED — The United Way of Central Kansas is helping fight the record-breaking heat wave.
Julie Bugner-Smith, director of the United Way of Central Kansas, is working with the city of Larned to give away fans to deserving families who may not have air conditioning. United Way of Central Kansas has donated $500 to buy fans.
Fans are available from the Larned city office, 417 Broadway, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no qualification to pick up a fan.
Smith said she has grown aware of growing problem with families without adequate air conditioning.
“I had visited with Larned EMS Director Gary Hartman, and he had mentioned they responded to several calls, so we wanted to do something to help,” Smith said. “If we help one family, it’s worth it. We’ll keep this going because of the heat.”
United Way is receiving a discount on fans from Pamida. Smith said anyone who wants to donate can work through United Way, (620) 792-2403 or Larned city hall 285-8500.
