MOUNT HOPE — The Larned Indians, the defending Central Kansas League baseball champions, roared to a fast start with a 4-2 and 14-1 windswept doubleheader sweep over Haven. Larned (2-0, 2-0 CKL) plays Friday at Halstead. Winds blew 20 to 30 mph with gusts past 40 mph, kicking up constant dust on the dirt infield.
“I have been in a lot of Kansas wind games but that tops them all with 40 mph south wind gusts,” said Larned coach Chad Erway. “The players wore sunglasses to hit and pitch because it was a dirt infield.”
Erway was happy how his team performed in less than ideal conditions.
“We pitched very well. Everyone we put on the bump was sharp,” Erway said. “We hit the ball well and picked it up in the field. Overall, I was very pleased with our opening performance.”
LARNED 4, HAVEN 2 — Indian pitcher Landon Erway struck out six batters, doubled twice and drove in two runs to spark the Indians past Haven. Reliever Isiah Perez closed out the game in the seventh inning. Second baseman Evan Skelton keyed the defense by turning a double play. Catcher Carson Smith threw a baserunner out.
Erway’s double scored Evan Skelton after a hit batter and stolen base. Gage Skelton’s single brought home Erway for a 2-0 lead on pitcher Jeff Hendrixson. Erway’s groundout scored Carson Smith in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
Havens’s Jackson States singled home Hendrixson after a single and passed ball in a two-run fifth inning. James Henkle singled home States to clise Larned’s lead to 3-2.
Larned’s Erway doubled, stole third base and scored on Perez’s groundout in the sixth inning.
LARNED 14, HAVEN 1 — Isiah Perez led a 14-run attack with five runs batted in a 14-1 victory  over Haven. Pitcher Johnathon Herter worked three innings. Gage Skelton struck out four hitters in 21/3 innings and Evan Skelton struck out two batters. The Indians retired Haven’s final 13 batters.
Perez doubled home Evan Skelton and Landon Erway in the first inning. He singled home Mason Burris and Evan Skelton in a six-run sixth inning. His groundball scored Evan Skelton in a three-run second inning.
Evan Skelton, Erway and Herter each drove in two runs apiece. Larned scored six runs in the first two innings. The Indians scored runs off five Haven pitchers.
