LARNED — The Larned USD 495 board of education heard a report from the superintendent during the March 12 board meeting. The following are approved minutes from the March 12 meeting.
Attending were board members Marcia Giessel, Jay Haremza, Brenda Hagerman, Sharon Arnold, June Barger, Sharon Lessard, Jon Flint, superintendent; Phil Martin, board attorney; Jean Simmons, treasurer; Joyce Simpson, clerk. Kevin Reece was absent.
Fort Larned Superintendent Jon Flint reported to the board that the document they had received in their packet regarding Attendance Enterprise went out to each building, hopefully answering some questions that anyone might have as to why the district is making the change.
Flint stated that the district is starting to see some savings. Payroll costs were about 50 percent less and that doesn’t take into consideration the time the women in the buildings are saving.
Superintendent Flint also shared a printout from Blue Cross/Blue Shield about our usage and number of members that had claims. Flint stated that we will know by the first of May what our premiums will be.
Flint also noted that he is still researching a document that can be used on an exit interview. Right now, there will be 16 employees who would need the exit interview.
Superintendent Flint reported that Senator Schmidt stated that Senate Bill 450 is starting to get some traction, but the House still wants the districts to spend down their cash balances. However, there could be reduction of $40 to $41 per student base aid yet this year. If that comes to fruition, Flint stated that he would rather spend those funds on our district instead of sending it back to the state.
Flint stated that restructuring the board meetings is open to comments. President Jay Haremza stated that he felt the board needed to be more proactive about what was on the agenda. If there is something that a board member wants on the agenda it needs to be reported to either Haremza or the superintendent and if the board wants the administrators to talk about they should let the superintendent know.
Flint stated that he will get some sample agendas put together and get with Haremza to discuss.

Board Discussion
Sharon Lessard stated that back in January the board had received a draft copy of the KLN visit and inquired if a revised report had been received. Jon stated that the revised report was on our website but he would send it to the board members. Lessard noted that she would like a written report in response to the KLN needs analysis.
