Larned boys win at Gene Keady Classic

LARNED -- The Larned Indians roared into the semifinals of the Gene Keady Classic with an 87-35 victory Monday. Larned (2-0) will meet Ellinwood Friday. Larned led 23-12 after one quarter and 46-20 at halftime.
Derek Delgado scored 20 points, Evan Skelton scored 17 and Tyler Stelter added 14 points. The Indians played good pressure defense and scored easy transition baskets.
"We overwhelmed them with our ability to run the floor," said Larned coach Don Zimmerman. "The effort was really good tonight. The best thing the whole night was seeing Trevor Meyer back out there playing. Our post guys Derek Dalgado and Trevor Meyer can score. They were undersized which helped."

Kinsley girls 47, Larned 31 -- The Larned girls fell behind 9-0 and committed 28 turnovers against a pesky Kinsley team. The Indians trailed 26-13 at halftime. Larned (0-2) plays Thursday against Macksville in the consolation round.
Haley Skelton led Larned with 14 points and Kelsey Parr added seven points. The Indians made 17 of 32 free throws, but made just seven field goals.
“We get in such a hurry on our offense and that destroys everything that we’re trying to do,” said Larned coach Tricia Prescott. “I knew Kinsley was scrappers. They were aggressive to the basket.”
Scout Frame led Kinsley with 14 points and Amber Espinosa added 10 points.

Ellinwood boys 53, Macksville 46 -- Ellinwood outscored Macksville 19-11 in the fourth quarter and the Eagles scored 40 points in the second half in the Gene Keady Classic. Macksville led 22-13 at halftime.
Marc Waite and Tyson Martinez led the Eagles with 14 points apiece and Nathan Monday scored 13 points. Macksville’s Kaden Herman scored 15 points and Brigdon Russell added 12 points.

Ellinwood (2-0) will meet Kinsley (2-0) in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals. Sophie Filbert paced the Mustangs with 13 points. The Mustangs play Larned in Thursday’s consolation round.
