Larned VFW Auxiliary meets
LARNED —The Larned VFW Auxiliary met on the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. with Rita Kurtz presiding. Before the meeting, a salad supper was enjoyed.
Chaplain Tammi Maes led the opening ceremonies. Karen Gilkey, secretary-treasurer, submitted her reports.
Members reported flying their flag, donating greeting cards to Diversicare and Larned State Hospital, sending emails to congressmen and attending political meetings.
Karen Gilkey will represent the 7th VFW District at the Eisenhower Vigil in October. The purpose is to honor Dwight D. Eisenhower, raised in Abilene. Eisenhower was a 5-star General of the Army and the 34th President of the United States.
Larned will host the VFW Fall District Conference Oct. 9.
Welcome Inn Senior Center meets
LARNED — The Welcome Inn Senior Center held their monthly board meeting on the first Monday in September with President Lewis Young opening the meeting.
It was reported that the bus has new tires and hopefully, the inside rattle with the lift was fixed. The kitchen exhaust fan needed a new motor. This was fixed.
A yoga instructor is needed. Several phone calls have been made. A yoga instructor or an exercise instructor is being sought.
The yearly annual meeting is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5. The offices of president, financial secretary and reporter are up for re-election.
September is “Senior Center Appreciation Month.” The Larned Chamber of Commerce sponsored a coffee hour Sept. 29.
Pat Birzer, Lee Gilcris, and others were complimented on their cleaning and decorating.
A raffle basket will help with summer utility bills. The Welcome Inn Senior Center also needs work on repairs for the leaky roof.

Quilting Bees meet
LARNED — Members of the Quilting Quild met while sharing their projects at the First Presbyterian Church in Larned. Jenna won the shrug.
Discussion was held on the treasurer’s report and the same bank will be maintained in the future as in the past. Reports were given on the Pat Knoechel presentation the previous week held in Great Bend. Members were reminded of the upcoming “Quilting Diva” event at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Refreshments will be served to this free event which is opened to the public.
