LARNED — Larned High selected its August Spotlight students — Landon Erway, Athletics; Josh East, Leadership-Service; and Kate Schroeder, Academics; and Austin Carrington, Fine Arts.
Landon Erway, Sr.
Athletics
Erway earns the August Spotlight for Athletics.
Erway’s nomination stated that he constantly strives to become a better athlete and team member, Landon spends hours in the weight room and truly cares for each of his teammates.
“Landon works extremely hard and is constantly looking for ways in which to improve the team,” said Larned football assistant coach Tad Remy.
Erway has been a three-year varsity letterwinner for the Indian football and baseball teams. He earned all-league and all-state baseball honors last year at second base.
Erway earned first team all-Central Kansas League running back honors last year and led the team in rushing.
Last winter, he shattered the state clean record in the 165-pound division with a clean of 325 pounds. He led the Indian men’s powerlifting team to a runner-up finish at the Class 4A state meet.
Josh East, Jr.
Leadership/Service
East earns the August Spotlight in Leadership and Service.
One LHS teacher described East as a quiet, easy going student who is willing to help whenever a need exists.
“Not only does Josh do extremely well in the classroom, but he is also willing to serve his school without the expectation of a personal reward. Josh takes his responsibilities very seriously and always adheres to his commitments. Josh works until the task is completed, actually “shows up” for his work commitments, coming early and staying late to clean up, and then asks what else needs to be done.
“Josh holds himself to very high standards, has very high integrity, and pushes himself to do his best in all things. Therefore, students often look to him for leadership and help.”
East serves as the secretary for the International Club and is a member of National Honor Society.
Kate Schroeder, Sr.
Academics
Schroeder earns the August spotlight in Academics. She strives for academic excellence and is willing to work hard to achieve it.
Her nomination read, “Whether it’s extracting meaning from a difficult text, working with a complex mathematics concept, or asking demanding questions in the classroom, Kate will not settle for anything but the best. This curiosity for knowledge and the commitment to do what it takes to reach her academic goals have served as a model for her peers and has led to a membership in the Larned Chapter of National Honor Society.”
Austin Carrington, Jr.
Fine Arts
Carrington’s nomination read, “Austin is an outstanding musician who takes great pride in his music. His natural musical talents, his willingness to practice extra hours, and his love for music itself have allowed him to learn to play other instruments other than his main instrument, the Euphonium.
Carrington plays both the trombone and guitar which has greatly enhanced the LHS jazz band and the Indian marching band and to the development of a Larned High School Guitar Club.
His dedication to his love for music and to the Larned Band of Indians are prime reasons why Carrington was chosen for the August Spotlight in Fine Arts.
