LARNED — Larned Middle School student Macy Haas has qualified for the 2012 Sunflower Spelling Bee. Haas, a fifth-grader, will compete in Sunflower Spelling Bee scheduled March 17 at the Barton Community College fine arts auditorium.
Haas spelled “punctual,” correctly to win the contest Feb. 3 at Larned Middle School. Leslie Shewey of Larned Middle School coordinated the contest. Gina Conrad, eighth-grade language arts instructor at LMS, was the pronouncer.
Rachael Carlson, a sixth-grader from Pawnee Heights Elementary, finished as runner-up for the second consecutive year. Carlson missed the spelling of “remorseful,” after she left out an E in the 20th round.
After two spellers were left, Haas correctly spelled “carnival,” “replete,” “sequel,” “muscular,” “damageable,” “fajitas,” and “impel.”
Carlson kept pace by spelling with “mischief,” “audience,” “jealousy,” “microphone,” “vegetarian” and “animation.”
In an interesting twist, spellers were allowed to write out words on a dry-erase whiteboard before spelling.
