Preschooler Gentry Wood is shown with her prizes for completing the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Macksville City Library. This is a free program that encourages adults to read books to children to prepare them for kindergarten.

MACKSVILLE — Congratulations to Gentry Wood, the newest member on the Mini Mustang Wall of Fame!

The daughter of Clayton and Haleigh Wood, Gentry completed the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Macksville City Library with one more year of preschool left to complete.

While many kids (and adults) visit the library with no idea what they want to check out, this young patron would let it be known: “I want a raining book” or “a Princess book” or “An Activity Bag,” or whatever topic was foremost on her mind. A librarian’s dream!

When quizzed after receiving her prizes, these were her responses:

Favorite thing about the 1,000 Books program? The prizes.

Who read the most books to you? Mom

Do you read books to anyone? Just a little ... to my brother.

Do you have a favorite book? Princess ones.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Everything!

Then, in a quiet voice she added, “You know what?”

“What?”

Fingering the medal around her neck, “I’ve always wanted one of these!”

And after they left, her mama texted a priceless story from earlier when her daughter had told her that she wanted to be a “library picker.”

Mom asked what she meant, and she said, “Like Jody.” She “would help other people pick books.”
