The Barton County Historical Society will present Women on the Santa Fe Trail by Marla Matkin at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, in the Ray Schulz Memorial Library. Matkin is native Kansan descended from homesteaders, a former teacher, and utilizes her love of history and theater to entertain and inform audiences about the women of the Santa Fe Trail. She has made multiple appearances at Fort Larned historical site and has authored two children’s books, “Custer’s Mouse” and “A Dragon’s Tale.” Sponsors for this event are Veronica Coons, Layne and Barbara Shirk, Brad and Rickee Maddox, and Delta Tau Sorority.
Admission is free for members of the society and $5 for individuals over 16. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m, Light refreshments are provided and the bottled water for attendees is provided by Wheatland Electric. The Barton County Historical Society is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday all year and has summer hours from April to October, from 1-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
