Dale Burroughs

Golden Plains Quilts of Valor awarded 10 Quilts of Valor on June 28 at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Golden Plains QOV Group Leader Amy Schartz Mellor said the presentations also included one quilt presented by Dana Burroughs Pfanenstiel, High Plains Quilts of Valor group leader in Scott City. That presentation was to her father Dale Burroughs, who resides in Ellinwood.

Richard Ahlvers

United States Army veteran Richard Ahlvers was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Ahlvers served from 1955 to 1963. His military service began with ROTC while he attended Kansas State University. Following graduation, he attended Signal Officer training. Ahlvers served as a signal officer at Fort Monmouth, N.J., and Fort Huachuca, Ariz. His active duty ended in 1957 and he continued to serve in the Army Reserve until 1963. Dale Burroughs

United States Army veteran Dale Burroughs was awarded a Quilt of Valor from High Plains Quilts of Valor, Scott City, on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Burroughs served from 1955 to 1957. After completing basic training at Fort Chaffee, Ark., he continued field training and warfare training at Fort Carson, Colo. Burroughs was then sent to Fort Benning, Ga., where he was part of a testing unit for rifles, ammunition, and clothing. The rifles were tested in many different conditions including mud, dirt and water. He also tested Howitzer guns with different types of ammunition to see how they would act with different metals. Burroughs was also part of demonstrations for American and Foreign military officers that came to Fort Benning. The Quilt of Valor was made and quilted by Burroughs’s daughter, Dana Burroughs Pfanenstiel, High Plains Quilts of Valor Group Leader, Scott City. Burroughs resides in Ellinwood. Burroughs is pictured with his daughter Dana.


Arlen Schroeder

United States Army veteran Arlen Schroeder was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Schroeder served from 1960 to 1962, completing basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash. He was part of the 35th Combat Engineers. Following basic training, he continued at Fort Lewis as a finance clerk. Schroeder noted during his award that he had served between wars and he dedicated his Quilt of Valor to all the military personnel who served during wartime, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. John Palmer

United States Air Force and Navy Vietnam veteran John Palmer was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Palmer served from 1960 to 1980. After completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, he was sent to Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, where he served as a flight attendant. He also served at Kimpo Air Force Base, Korea; Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.; and Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. When it was time to re-enlist, the Air Force did not need any more people, so he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1964, and was sent to San Diego, Calif. He was an aviation storekeeper, serving aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. He completed two Vietnam War cruises. Palmer’s quilt top was made by Linda Shull, quilting by Amy Schartz Mellor. Joseph Levingston

United States Army veteran Joseph Levingston was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Levingston served in 1960, completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He served his unit as a unit supply specialist with Company D, Fourth Battalion. Bob Cheney

United States Navy veteran Bob Cheney was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Cheney served from 1962 to 1966. After completing basic training at San Deigo, Calif., Cheney served aboard the USS Shangri-La out of Pensacola and Jackson, Fla., where they participated in hurricane surveillance. John Schugart

United States Navy veteran John Schugart was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Schugart served from 1965 to 1969. He completed boot camp at San Diego, Calif., and advanced training at Memphis Naval Air Station, as a jet mechanic on A-4 planes. Schugart was then stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station, Fresno, Calif., where he was on the fuel crew and assisted planes landing on aircraft carriers. Stephen Arnold

United States Army Vietnam veteran Stephen Arnold was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Arnold served from 1969 to 1971. He completed basic training as a mechanic on four wheeled vehicles and tanks. Arnold served in Vietnam as was also a driver for a warrant officer. Denise Crowe

United States Air Force veteran Denise Crowe was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Crowe served from 1984 to 1995. Crowe completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and served at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., and Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. She was trained as a jet engine mechanic. She was stationed at Okinawa, Japan; Minot Air Force Base, N.D.; and Otis Air National Guard Base, Cape Cod, Mass. After Crowe’s enlistment was up, she continued to serve in the National Guard. The quilt top was made by Margaret Evers, quilting by Amy Schartz Mellor.  Roger McPherson

United States Air Force veteran Roger McPherson was awarded a Quilt of Valor from Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. McPherson served from 1988 to 1992 and was trained in environmental and food health, sanitary inspections, health examinations, and he monitored the hearing of people in the flight line. He served two years at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, in the Entomology Department, where they caught mosquitoes and cockroaches to catalog illnesses that could be transmitted by them to humans. He was named Airman of the Quarter while in Okinawa. McPherson was also stationed in Sussberg, Netherlands, for two years. The quilt top was made by Alice Stoskopf, quilting by Amy Schartz Mellor. Brian Stout

United States Marine Corps veteran Brian Stout was awarded a Quilt of Valor on June 28, 2019, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Stout served from 1989 to 1993. He completed boot camp at San Diego, Calif., and advanced training in North Carolina. He served in Okinawa, Japan, and at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
