The Great Bend Recreation Commission still has openings in its Holiday Kids Day Out programs over Christmas break, said Garet Fitzpatrick, recreation program coordinator. Programs on December 27 and December will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are available for kids 6-12 years old.

“Meet your friends at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center for some fun while school is not in session,” Fitzpatrick said.

Kids Day Out with The Birds will be held on Friday, December 27. Participants will enjoy a fun and challenging adventure. The morning will be spent at the Activity Center, 2715 18th St., playing some games in the gym followed by organized activities and crafts in the classroom. In the afternoon, they will be bused to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center to learn about winter birds. Learn to ID different bird tracks in the snow, make a bird feeder to hang outside your window, participate in the Christmas Bird Count as you walk the trail with binoculars, build a bird nest, and learn about different types of eggs. After the bird adventure is over at the KWEC, the bus will take kids back to the Activity Center to finish off the day with some other organized activities. Pizza, fruit and beverages will be provided for lunch.

Then on Monday, December 30, the Rec is offering Holiday Kids Day Out with Mind Sculpt Games and Bowling. This day will include crafts, games, bowling and other fun organized activities at the Activity Center. Darcy Leech, owner of Mind Sculpt Games, will lead participants in some exciting board games in the morning which are easy to learn and fun to play. In the afternoon, kids will head to Walnut Bowl for bowling. Students will be making their own ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch.

Both days will also include fruit and other items for lunch and snacks.

Enroll for one or both days. The entry fee is $15 per day with the entry deadline set for Wednesday, December 18. Space is limited. Partial scholarships are available for both days.

Students will be bused by Great Bend USD 428 and parents must fill out a transportation request registering their children. For more information or to register for these programs, contact the Recreation Commission office by calling 793-3755, ext 110, stop by the office located at 1214 Stone St. or email recreation@gbrec.net.
