Recently, the Gallop Poll organization came out with its annual morality poll for America. This past weekend, Dr. Richard Land commented on the poll during his Richard Land Live program. I saw some interesting things in both and a need to return to what the Bible has to say.
The poll found that Americans have become more pro-life, even among Democrats! Now a majority of Americans say that they are pro-life. This is good.
On the other side of the fence, the poll shows a decline in moral practices. There is an increase in out-of-wedlock births. There is a marked decline in children being raised by two-parent (defined as one man married to one woman) families. There is an increase in the use of pornography.
Dr. Land commented on the last item at one point during his program. He noted that more and more women are becoming involved in pornography. This used to be a vice exclusively used by men. For example, a book that is currently at the top on the New York Times best seller list is essentially pornography. It is being purchased mostly by women. If porn becomes accepted by the majority, this nation’s spiritual survival is in serious trouble.
Christians in America need to address these issues now. The reason is that America is one of only two countries in history that was started by a covenant with God. The other is Israel. Our covenant was initiated by devout Christians who came over from Europe to avoid religious persecution. The covenants that they entered with God are the Mayflower and Massachusetts Compacts. We have clearly left those agreements behind so much so that children in our schools are no longer taught these things.
Because America was begun by a covenant with God, we are subject to the consequences that come out of that covenant. Those consequences are clearly spelled out in Leviticus chapter 26 and Deuteronomy Chapter 28. I will quote some sections from Leviticus 26 here.
“If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. I will grant peace in the land. ...
“But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, and so violate my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your life. You will plant seed in vain, you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you. I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.
“If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile toward me, I myself will be hostile toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. And I will bring the sword upon you to avenge the breaking of the covenant, and you will be given into enemy hands. I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings.”
If we look carefully, we can see many of these things already happening. As a result, Dr Land suggested that we participate in a 40-day period of intense prayer before the upcoming elections. He contends, and I think he is correct, that this is the most critical election since the Civil War. The outcome of this election could very well determine the fate of the nation for decades to come. As I have said before, 2 Chronicles 7:14 is a critical verse for us in these times. Let us join in this prayer!
