The Barton County Young Professionals are putting together the first ever YP5K and half marathon this Saturday, Oct. 10, in Great Bend. Participants can choose to run or walk the 5K course or take on the more challenging half marathon course.
“We do not want to trick people,” YP Steering Committee member Rachel Mawhirter said. “The races are not just for YP members, they are just organized by YP. All ages are invited to participate.”
Barton County Young Professionals are using the event to raise funds to support wellness by purchasing more bike racks for the community.
The races will start and finish in the northeast corner of Veterans Memorial Park. Between the race events, there will be a Family Fun Zone with activities for the entire family.
“The Family Fun Zone will include free child care, tons of prizes, an awards ceremony, and a hot breakfast that is open to the public for a donation,” Mawhirter said.
Medals will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in five age groups for each event and all half marathon finishers will receive a medal.
Registration opens at 6 a.m. with the half marathon starting at 7 a.m. followed by the 5K beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $35 for the 5K and $55 for the half marathon.
