School bond election on hold

A special election for school bonds won’t take place in April as previously reported, Barton County Clerk Donna Zimmerman confirmed Thursday. “April 28th is off the table,” she said.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be a special election later this year, but nothing official has come from Great Bend Unified School District No. 428, Zimmerman said. At this point it is too late to schedule a special election in April, she added.

On Jan. 30, the USD 428 Board of Education approved a resolution with four bond questions that will appear on the ballot at a special election. Although there was discussion about holding the special election on April 28, Zimmerman said she never received a signed resolution from the district. She said she has been in contact with USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton about a possible date. However, Zimmerman said she isn’t in a position to speak for the district.

The Great Bend Tribune attempted to contact Thexton late Thursday afternoon and is awaiting a response. Bond discussion is on the agenda for the next school board meeting, set for 5 p.m. Monday at the District Education Center, 201 South Patton road. According to the agenda, “Mr. Thexton will update the board on bond information relevant to USD 428.”
