Someone shot several rounds into the USD 428 District Education Center shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, Sheriff Brian Bennendir reports.

Deputies were dispatched to an alarm call at 9:05 p.m. and discovered four rounds fired from a 9 mm handgun had entered the building at 201 S. Patton Road and lodged in the walls.

“The Sheriff’s Office has recovered shell casings and bullets from the scene,” Bellendir reports.

“Witnesses stated a Dodge Neon or Cobalt was seen leaving the area at the time of the shooting. Damage is estimated in excess of $6,000. No one was in the office at the time,” the sheriff stated in a news release.

School administrators said the shots damaged the front doors. A glass company was contacted and the doors were repaired Monday morning.
Bullets passed through an entryway with two sets of glass doors, across the lobby and into a wall behind the service counter. Bullet holes could be seen in the wall and in a stained glass “Power Panther” on the wall.

The sheriff’s office is seeking the public’s help in locating the suspect. Any person with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers, 620-792-1300. The investigation is ongoing.
