Sterling College hosts Robert Burns Night January 7th

Sterling College is welcoming back new and old acquaintances on Saturday, Jan. 25, for Robert Burns Night. Recognizing the achievements of Robert Burns, Scottish poet and songwriter, this event will be one of many similar events held around the world on Jan. 25 to celebrate Burns’s birthday. Tickets for the event, which includes a traditional Scottish meal, are available to the public for $18.
Robert Burns Night will begin in the Cafeteria at 6 p.m. with tea and scones, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. A traditional Scottish meal from the late 1700s will be served, including haggis, Scotland’s national dish. Dr. Mark Watney, assistant professor of language and literature, will read “Ode to a Haggis,” a poem written by Burns, before the dish is presented. The night will also feature the bagpipes played by Clay Thomas, director of the physical plant and member of the City of McPherson Pipe Band. After readings of other poems by Burns, the evening will conclude with the traditional singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
