The lemonade stand set up at Monday’s school board meeting was a reminder that soon children throughout Great Bend soon will be reading “The Lemonade War,” by Jacqueline Davies.
The Great Bend Reading Initiative will kick off Sept. 25. Children will receive copies of this book about a brother and sister who launch an all-out war to see who can sell the most lemonade before school starts.
The Reading Initiative is similar to the One District One Book program that Great Bend has implemented for the past two years. Park Elementary Principal Phil Heeke is the coordinator of this year’s initiative.
Teacher copies of the children’s book were handed out at the back-to-school breakfast for staff on Aug. 21. School board members received copies of the book and were treated to lemonade on Monday.
Heeke and staff will have more information when Park Elementary hosts the next board meeting at noon on Sept. 28.
