The Great Bend Fire Department responded to two fires on Saturday.
The first call came at 11:42 a.m., when a cement truck was on fire at 3024 Railroad Ave. Chief Mike Napolitano reports the engine and cab of the truck were fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.
“The fire was quickly extinguished and the truck was a total loss; however, there was no damage to the cement mixing bed of the truck,” Napolitano said. “The investigation determined the fire started in the engine area of the truck and spread to the cab.”
At 10:34 p.m. units were dispatched to extinguish a large bonfire on the east side of the Radium Bridge in the riverbed. There were three vehicles with bystanders trying to pull the larger logs out of the fire to slow it down. Bystanders told firefighters that they were heading east from the Diversion Dam when they drove up on the fire and called 911.
Units were on the scene for one hour extinguishing the fire with the help of the bystanders.
