USD 112 updates policy handbook

Each year, boards of education across the state review policies and procedures and make updates. The Central Plains USD 112 board made a few changes to policies at the direction of the Kansas Association of School Boards. Though many of those changes were just in verbiage and wording, a couple of changes allow the school more control over a situation.

For example, under the evacuations and emergencies policies, a portion has been removed that would allow students to be picked up by their parents during an emergency. Students will remain at the school when insufficient warning time does not allow for evacuation.

Other changes were to such areas as delinquent lunch balances and accommodations for uniformed service. These can all be viewed in the USD 112 handbooks.

In other news, students from Central Plains Elementary School were recognized for their efforts in the school-wide spelling bee and qualifying for the county bee. These students will represent CPES: Adalyn Habiger, first place; Otto Bogner, second place; Griffin Cuffe, Huntley Kirmer, Aislee Martin, Gage Stiles, Stephen Montoya, Rhett Schmidt, Benton Decker and Jaxson Schartz.

These students will represent Central Plains Jr./Sr. High School: Zoey Bogner, first place, and Ashtyn Robl, second place.  At Wilson Elementary School, two students, Emma Keith and Emma Mahoney, have been selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association All-State Choir Concert in Wichita Feb. 22.

The school board is still accepting applications for the open board position. Applications are available at WES and the district office.

The board was also briefed on the success of the Central Plains Diploma Completion Program during a quarterly report. The program has assisted 1,036 students in obtaining their diplomas to date. Current students are enrolled across the state to take advantage of the program which provides a second chance to obtain their education, explained Interim Superintendent Bill Lowry.

The next USD 112 Board of Education meeting will be held on March 11.
