Winter square and round dance lessons start Friday

Square and round dance lessons start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the Burnside Room the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St.

Class coordinator Virginia Klepper said classes will meet for eight Fridays, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Cost is $22 per person; singles and couples are welcome. Albert Braun from Hays will be the caller and instructor.

"Square dancing is our national dance and heritage," Klepper said. "It is an easy aerobic activity, a fun social, and is especially good for the heart and brain. People of all ages are welcome to this class with minimum enrollment of 17 participants."

Braun has called dances all over Kansas and has taught square dancing at Fort Hays State University. He’ll be teaching mainstream square dancing as well as an introduction to round dance, which includes ballroom steps.

Enrollment is being taken now at the Recreation Center, but will also be taken the first night of class, In fact, Klepper invites anyone who is considering signing up to come to the first session as a guest. Free snacks will be provided.
