Local licensed Zumba instructors hope to get people dancing and smiling at a Zumbathon planned for the evening of July 8 at St. Rose Auditorium.
The event is a fundraiser for Prince of Peace Parish, said Mercedes Helms, one of the instructors who will lead the calorie-burning dancing from 6:30-9:30 p.m. that Saturday in the auditorium at 1412 Baker Ave. in Great Bend. Proceeds will help underwrite devotions and youth programs at the Catholic parish.
The organizers want to get the word out early so people will mark their calendars. People can order tickets now at a reduced price: $5 for adults 18 and older, and $3 for children 10-18 years old. At the door, admission will be $8 and $5. To register now call the parish office, 620-792-1396, extension 115.
All of the organizers are ZINs, which means they are licensed through the Zumba Instructor Network (www.zumba.com).
“I just want people to have fun,” said Helms, who also works at the parish office. Zumba classes mix low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style dance fitness party choreographed to Latin and World music. There will be lights, music, door prizes and drawings, and healthy concessions available.
Other Zumba instructors involved in planning this event include Margarita Ayala and Brandon Nuss from Club 1 Fitness, Laurie McCurry from the Great Bend Recreation Commission and the Hoisington Recreation Commission, and Alma Renteria and Zila Torres, co-owners of A&Z Studio in Great Bend. There’s also Laura Straub, a freelance ZIN. Helms is a freelancer who sometimes works at A&Z.
