Great Bend woman dies in weekend crash

BARTON COUNTY — A Great Bend woman died as the result of injuries sustained in a vehicle crash with a combine Saturday morning, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir reported Monday.

According to the report, BCSO deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of SW 60th Ave. and SW 30th Road, about four miles southwest of Great Bend near Dundee in Barton County.

Investigation at the scene indicated a 2016 Case IH combine operated by Charles Haas, 53, Larned, was westbound on SW 30 Road approaching the intersection. The combine did not have a header on it at the time of the crash.

A 2017 Ford Escape driven by Ronald Heine, 75, Great Bend, was northbound on SW 60 Ave., and failed to stop at the intersection. The Escape struck the front of the combine and continued northbound, rolling one time and coming to rest on its wheels.

Heine and his passenger, Wanda Heine, 71, both sustained serious injuries and were transported to the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend campus. Wanda Heinie later died as a result of her injuries.

Haas was not injured in the crash. The crash is still under investigation by the BCSO.
