Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, the body of Colorado man Andrew M. Jauch was recovered from Wilson Lake in Russell County after a search by The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Russell County emergency crews who were assisting the Russell County Sheriff’s Office. After an investigation, it has been determined that Jauch, 52, drowned after an incident on Monday. Jauch had jumped into the water to cool off after the boat he was riding on had mechanical issues, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Windy conditions contributed to the drowning. Jauch was separated from the boat due to the wind. Occupants inside the boat attempted to assist him but were unable to due to the windy conditions. Wind conditions at the time of the incident were around 20 mph out of the south/southeast.
This marks the third apparent drowning at Kansas lakes over the holiday weekend. A 51-year-old male drowned at Lake Miola, near Paola, on Sunday and another adult male is presumed drowned at Maxwell State Lake in McPherson County after a body was recovered on Saturday.
