On Sept. 13, Apple released iOS 10, the next generation operating system for iPhone. This new update came with dozens of improvements, changes and new features, some of which users arent even aware.

Changes were made to iMessage, Siri, Photos, Notes and more. Here are some of these updates and how to use them.

iMessage

The most changes were undoubtedly made to iMessage, Apples built-in instant messaging service.

How to install iMessage Apps

Apps specifically created for iMessage can be found in the App Store, which can be easily accessed from iMessage by tapping on the App Store icon, then tapping the four dots on the bottom left corner of the screen, then tapping the + Store icon.

Some of the iMessage apps include JibJab, Fandango Movies, ESPN, The Weather Channel and MsgMe TicTacToe.

iMessage stickers are also available for purchase, which are various sets of images, similar to emoji, categorized by themes. Some popular sticker sets are Star Wars Stickers, Angry Birds Stickers, Disney Stickers and KIMOJI Stickers.

Other new features in iMessage include being able to doodle text messages and 100 new and bigger emoji.

Creating handwritten messages allows users to draw or write their own messages on their touchscreen or to choose from default doodles in iMessage. To access this feature, turn your phone horizontal, with rotation lock turned off, which will cause the handwriting window to appear.

To create fun animations using Digital Touch in iMessage, tap the heart icon next to the text box in iMessage. Users can import a photo to draw on, or draw their own message, which the recipient can watch as a live drawing. These animations auto-delete unless specifically kept.

Emoji are not only bigger with iOS 10, but iPhone can now detect words in messages and suggest replacing them with emoji. After the sender has typed a message, tapping the emoji keyboard button will highlight words that could be replaced with emoji.

Typing a message and holding down the send button will activate bubble and screen effects. Bubble effects Slam, Loud, Send With Gentle and Invisible Ink will appear and show up in the selected message and will appear for the sender and recipient.

Voicemail transcriptions

When stuck in a meeting or another place you cant check voicemails, iOS 10 now has a feature that transcribes voicemails so they are readable like emails or texts.

Siri

Updates to Siri have made it possible for users to call an Uber or Lyft and make a phone call with WhatsApp. Simply hold down the home button and give the command. Siri also has the ability to announce incoming calls when users are listening to music or when their device is connected to a speaker system. To activate this feature, go to Settings > Phone > Announce Calls.
