Meditating in the middle of the freeway in bumper-to-bumper traffic seems both impossible and impractical.

But some apps are making meditation happen. Apps are leading the way to a deeper, more fulfilling life for some meditators. These apps, like Headspace, buddhify and Calm, bring meditation into the 21st century, Lizzie Widdicombe reported for The New Yorker.

Forty-seven per cent of our life is spent lost in thought. Distracted! Headspace creator Andy Puddicombe said at a conference. If we meditate a lot, its almost like theres a little more room, a bit of space in the mind.

These apps give users recorded meditations to help them relax and, in some cases, reach their goals, Widdicombe wrote. Other apps also help users check their feelings and diagnose potential threats to meditation.

Meditation has become the newest health craze, but it might have more staying power and bigger benefits. According to The Huffington Post, meditation reduces stress, slows aging, improves concentration and helps cardiovascular health.
