Participants in a fundraiser for a Great Bend family who lost their home in a fire on Feb. 17 wait patiently for the first event of the “triathlon” to begin, Saturday at the VFW.

On Friday, Feb. 17, tragedy struck when the home of Larry and Sheree Marshall was totaled. Everything was lost to the fire, including two dogs.

On Saturday, a fundraiser was organized at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 in Great Bend to help the Marshall family. This fundraiser was billed as a “triathlon” of corn hole, pool, and shuffleboard. Each team was required to participate in all three events and pay a $50 registration fee. Half of the registration fees will go to the winners of the triathlon while the other half is donated to the Marshalls.

There were more people than expected Saturday afternoon as the registration got underway.

The event was organized by VFW Post member Mike Harbaugh and his wife Shawndra, auxiliary member, along with Lloyd Lewis and his wife Kym.

“As members of the VFW post, we are always looking for ways to give back to our community and we feel like this one is a great cause,” Harbaugh said. “We have also had several other people in the community come forward to help with donations so 100% of the food sales can be given to the family.”

The class of 1985, Brent’s Towing, and Darren’s Automotive were responsible for donating the food.

“My dad is more of a giver than a taker,” said Dariane Schridde, daughter of the Marshalls.
