MANITOWOC, Wis. – Barbara M. Schmidt, 62, died Jan. 29, 2011, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, Wis. She was born March 15, 1948, at Dighton, the daughter of August and Bertha Lee (Schanfeldt) Stremel. On May 17, 1974, she married Doug Schmidt at Larned. He survives.

Mrs. Schmidt was a Manitowoc, Wis., resident since 1988, coming from Great Bend. She grew up in Dighton and graduated from Dighton High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Newman University in Wichita. She worked for the Center for Counseling in Great Bend for 18 years and for Coldwell Banker as a real estate agent for more than 20 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and was a past member of the Board of Realtors.

Survivors include: Her husband of the home; her father of Pharr, Texas; one sister, Beth Denney of Topeka; two brothers, Steve Stremel of Farmer’s Branch, Texas, and Ed Stremel of Lantana, Texas; brother-in-law Bob Schmidt of Chandler, Ariz.; and mother-in-law, Betty Schmidt of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her mother Bertha Stremel and her father-in-law Jack Scmidt.

Mass of Christian burial was Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi in Manitowoc. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
