Douglas Dean “Doug” Karst

HAYS — Douglas Dean “Doug” Karst, 60, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 21, 1962 in Hays, the son of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. He graduated from Hays High School in 1982 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doug worked as a contract pumper, bus driver, and was a route driver for Hays Daily News. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafts, playing poker, especially Texas Hold’em, and was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of all, Doug loved his family.

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Karst and wife Mary of Hays and Mark Karst and wife Shannon of Victoria,; two sisters, Dianne Schmidt and husband Gene of Great Bend and Maryln Schumacher and husband Larry of Lyons; two brothers-in-law, Pat Herrman of Sturgis, S.D. and Lance Smith and wife Courtney of Hays; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Steven Karst; three sisters, Lois Herrman, Patty Karst, and Lanita Smith; and a nephew, Dustin Karst.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church.
