OLMITZ — Gary J. Mater, 77, passed away in Nov. 22, 2020, at his son’s home in Hoisington. He was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Troy, Ohio, to Fred and Rita (Fuerst) Mater. Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of PFC.
Gary, a lifetime resident of Olmitz, also living in California, New Mexico and Arizona, was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz. He was a truck driver and machinist, working for a broad range of industries. Gary led a full life of various interests, including music, having played the guitar and dulcimer.
Survivors include one son, Randy Mater and Ashley Walters of Hoisington; two brothers, Kenneth J. Mater and wife Nancy of Olathe and Dan Mater and wife Renee of Olmitz; sister-in-law, Kim Schulz of Linwood; grandchildren, Ava Bray, LaShauna Mickle, Eileah Morris and Randon Morris; and great granddaughter, Katerina Chambers. He was preceded in passing by his parents, and by his brother, Dave Mater.
Memorial services for Gary will be announced at a later date. There will be no visitation or viewing, as cremation has taken place. Memorials may be given to the Gary Mater Memorial Fund, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.
