CAMERON, Mo. — Genola McCarter, 90, a long-time resident of Great Bend, passed away on Jan. 31 at the Missouri Veterans’ Home in Cameron, Mo. Born July 2, 1923, in La Crosse, she was the daughter of David Nelson and Esther (Searl) Sankey. After graduating high school in La Crosse, she attended Grace Hospital Nursing School in Hutchinson. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Army Nurse Corps and served at O’ Reilly General Army Hospital in Springfield, Mo. She worked as a flight attendant for TWA in 1946 and was an instructor at the Grace Hospital Nursing School until 1950.
She married Harry McCarter in Hutchinson on Feb. 1, 1950. They moved to Great Bend in 1954. She was the proprietor of the Country Home Kennels of Great Bend for more than 30 years and was active in many social and business organizations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Ken (Loretta) McCarter, Lathrop, Mo.; son-in-law, Gerald Eberley, Siloam Springs Ark.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 2010; brother, Wayne Sankey; daughter, Melinda Eberley; grandson, Jeffrey Eberley; and great-granddaughter Deseree Eberley.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the Poland-Thompson Funeral Home in Cameron, Mo. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be held at later date at the La Crosse cemetery in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to the Comfort Care Hospice of Cameron, Mo., or to the Salvation Army.
