Gilbert “Gil” Francis Sander, 92, went to meet his Lord, October 15, 2021, passing away at Country Place Senior Living in Hoisington. He was born May 2, 1929, in Victoria, Kansas, to Frank and Agnes (Dinkel) Sander. On June 14, 1949, he married Kathleen Mae “Kay” Rajewski at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Vincent, Ks. They lived in Victoria, Salina, Hays and Plainville before settling in Great Bend in 1955. Kay passed away December 13, 2018. Gilbert began working on the family farm then on to Royal Crown Cola, O’Neil Tank Service & L.T. Shaffer. In 1957 he dedicated 34 years to Davis Mud and Chemical as a truck driver, warehouse manager and a sales representative where he was dubbed the “Mud God”. He also worked as an Account Representative for Unibar Energy Services and TD Mud Inc. Gilbert was dedicated to his Lord and Saviour and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He made over 1,000 rosaries in his lifetime for family, friends and the missions. As a family, they loved traveling and took many road trips when the children were young. In later years, Gil and Kay enjoyed many international trips.
Survivors include, four children, Debbie Ann Sander Walker of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Glen (Becky) of Great Bend, Mark (Vicki) of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Kirk (Joan) of Great Bend; eight grandchildren, Debbie’s son, Cameron Andreas Sander Walker (Patricia) of Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Glen’s children, Andrea (Joe) Babb of Wichita, Mathew of Wichita and Tyler (Elizabeth) of Great Bend, Bert’s daughter, Stephanie Hamm, Kirk’s daughters, Monica (Tony) Kruse of Wichita, Nicole (Justin) Tracy of Brownwood, Texas and Brandi Sander of Great Bend. Great-grandchildren, Noah, Scott and Liam Walker, Blaize and Brecken Babb, Tatum, Jordan and Cameron Sander, Haily O’Donnell and Noah Hamm, Nathan, Braden and Madelyn Kruse, Jack, Logan and Ella Rose Tracy. Sister Agnes Schrant of Lawrence Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Bert, infant daughter Yvonne Amy. Brothers Edwin, Donald, Leo, Francis and Johnny Sander. Sisters, Teckla Hammerschmidt, Imelda Sander and Isabel Hart.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, October 21, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family School Endowment Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
