SCOTT CITY — Gladys Lorene Young, 93, passed away June 14, 2022, at Parklane Nursing Home in Scott City. She was born on Nov. 22, 1928, at Dighton, to Pete and Retta (McClelland) Eitel. She married Estel “Pepper” Van Pelt on Dec. 21, 1946, at Scott City. He died Dec. 4, 1988. She then married Okie Burgess Young on May 26, 1990, at Scott City. He died Oct. 19, 2013. 

A Great Bend resident for eight years, Gladys was a longtime Dighton resident, having previously resided in Arizona for a short time. She was a former member of the Dighton Methodist Church. Gladys was an avid golfer who achieved four “Holes in One” and was previously a Scott City Golf Club Champion. In her early years, Gladys enjoyed bowling. She especially loved spending time with her family.  

Survivors include, two sons, Regan Van Pelt (Bertie Reynolds) of McPherson and Ryan Van Pelt and wife Ruth of Great Bend; a daughter, Marlene Murphy and husband Larry of Scott City; six grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Estel Van Pelt and Okie Young; two brothers, Orville Eitel and Howard Eitel; two sisters, Evelyn Bretz and LaVona Murphy; and a great granddaughter, Andrea Murphy.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the Dighton Cemetery in Dighton, Kan. with Pastor Steven Payne presiding. Memorials have been designated to Lane County Historical Society or Scott City Animal Rescue, in care of Bryant Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net
