HOISINGTON ‑ Jeannie Marie Mater, 78, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died at her home in Hoisington, surrounded by family, on May 27, 2022. She was born August 25, 1944, in Ellsworth, Kansas, the daughter of Walter “Earl” and Myrtle Nora (Maynard) Thornton. Jeannie was a 1962 graduate of Ellsworth High School.
A longtime Hoisington resident she worked as a CNA for Home Health in LaCrosse, Kansas and later as a CNA and ward clerk for Clara Barton Hospital retiring in October of 2020. Jeannie was envolved in 4-H for many years with her children. She was an excellent cook and and baker and was best known for her kolaches, elephant ears and her pepper jelly.
Survivors include; five daughters, Stacey Vincent of Hoisington, Dulcy Palnau, Corrie Mater, Audrey (Chad) Kirkman, and Sarah Mater, all of Wichita; a sister, Charlotte Brown of Puyallup, Washington; eight grandchildren, April (LaShon) VanSyoc of Hoisington, Tristan Palnau of Wichita, Brody Nicholas of Osage City, Payton Steiner, Aidan Palnau, both of Wichita, Braxton Nicholas of Hoisington, Orvis and Theodore Kirkman both of Wichita; and three great grandchildren, Ki, Nora, and Ella VanSyoc.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Aaron Nicholas; a sister, Veatress Webb, and a brother, Earl “Junior” Thornton.
Friends may sign the book Monday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with family to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.
Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at New Life Baptist Church, Hoisington, with Pastor Denny Lewis presiding.
