John Elmer Slack Jr. 1933 - 2018

LARNED – John Elmer Slack Jr., 84, passed away Jan. 9, 2018, at Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge. He was born Nov. 7, 1933 in Hutchinson, the son of John Elmer Sr. and Helen Margaret Wilson Slack. A longtime area resident, he was a retired Police Chief for Larned, serving from 1963 to 1993 and he served in the United States Army.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign War, American Legion Post No. 106, Kansas Peace Officer Association, Kansas Chief Police Association and National Rifle Association.
On Dec. 19, 1953, he married Elaine Babb, his high school sweetheart of 64 years in Larned. She survives.
Other survivors include, two sons, Derek (Beth) Slack, Larned, Daran Slack, Tonganoxie; two daughters, Dane Vick, Farmington, N.M., Deann (Paul) Cantrell, Buckeye, Ariz.; brother, William (Dixie) Slack, Farmington, N.M.; sister, Edith Horner, Larned; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Larned, with Pastor Damon Bradley presiding. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, with military graveside rites. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church, V.F.W. or American Legion, all in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Box 477 Larned, KS 67550. Condolences may be left at www.beckwithmortuary.com.
