WINNSBORO, Texas — Mrs. Johnna Stewart Hughes was born on Jan. 28, 1922, on the family farm in Brumley, near Gilmer, Texas, to John M. and Ida Mauck Stewart. She departed this life on Jan. 26, two days short of her 89th birthday. She and her husband of 52 years, Mr. George W. "Cotton" Hughes, were married on June 13, 1945, near Pittsburg, Texas. They moved to Winnsboro in 1946, where they raised their family. Cotton passed away in the family home in 1997 and then Johnna moved to Great Bend in 2001 to live near her family.
Johnna was preceded by her parents, her husband, and all her siblings — five brothers, seven sisters, and a beloved sister-in-law, Margaret Stewart. Johnna is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Tommy Hughes and Brian Gottshalk, Danny and Ellie Hughes, and Rickey and Terri Hughes; six grandchildren, Peter and Tiffany Hughes, Andrew Hughes and Mike Wallick, Brian and Michelle Hughes, Sarah and Tony Morlandt, Nathan and Erin Hughes and Kiley Hughes; five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Graham and Olivia Hughes, and Sophia and Vincent Morlandt; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Beaty Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Ethridge officiating. Interment will follow at Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro, Texas. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
