Lavina A. Hurst 1931 - 2021
Lavina A. Hurst, 90, of Great Bend, passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2021 at Azria Health Great Bend. She was born July 22, 1931 at Rosalia, Kan., to Morris Ray and Katie Parks. She was united in marriage to James Hanks, Sr., Aug. 18, 1947 in Rockville, Md. Lavina lived in Kansas nearly all her life except for when she lived in the state of Washington from 1967-73. She had been a resident of Great Bend since 1973. Lavina worked in the plastics department at Fuller Brush Company in Great Bend for 25 years, retiring in 1998. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and after moving to the nursing home in 2015 enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include: two sons, Terry (Darla) Hanks, Hays, and Steven (Connie) Hanks of Arkansas City; two daughters, Caroline (Brad) McCune, Great Bend and Diana Osburn of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Parks, Sr., Overland Park. Lavina was preceded in death by her parents; husbands James Hanks, Sr. in 1998 and Eugene Hurst in 2007; a son, James Hanks Jr.; and a daughter Angela Collier; a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Byerly and a great-grandson, Pierce Edward Fitzmorris; three brothers (Don, Alvin, and Jerry) and five sisters (Iva, Lelah, Ruby, Reba, and Hester).
In accordance with Lavina’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in rural Great Bend, with Pastor Ken Gray officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Kindred Hospice of Hutchinson, Kan.
