Verna Maxine Pierce Burks 1920 - 2012


LONGMONT, Colo. —  Verna “Maxine” Pierce Burks, 92, died Oct. 13 at her home in Longmont, Colo.
Born Feb. 6, 1920 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Oscar Harmon and Della E. (Parker) Pierce. She joined the army after completing four years of nursing school and was stationed in Fairborn, England, working in Quonset Huts for a hospital treating injured soldiers during World War II. After the war, she moved to Chicago for post-graduate schooling. She married Jim Burks on Dec. 30, 1956 in Great Bend. Maxine worked as an obstetrics nurse in Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colo.; and Longmont, Colo. on and off throughout her career, and prior to retiring she worked in a nursing home as a registered nurse.
Survivors include her loving husband James Burks; as well as her three children, Charlotte Weston and her husband Scott, Brian Burks and his wife Deborah, and Kathleen Van Norden; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth VanDerwalker and her husband Darin, Melissa Weston, Jeremiah Van Norden, Mary Neff and her husband Doug, John Burks, Joshua Van Norden and Sarah Van Norden; and three great-grandchildren, Emilee VanDerwalker, Michael Neff and Ryne VanDerwalker. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Nething.
Funeral services were be held on Oct. 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Longmont.
