LACROSSE — Vernon C. Bortz, 102, died Jan. 21, 2014 at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse.
Born May 31, 1911, in Timken, he was the son of William and Amanda (Pietz) Bortz. On Oct. 5, 1933, he married Lillian E. Wright in Newkirk, Okla. She died on Feb. 24, 1991. He then married Esther Mapes in 1998. She died on Jan. 15, 2003. A resident of LaCrosse since 2011, coming from Sun City, Ariz., he was an engineer for Boeing and also worked at Beechcraft. He enjoyed landscaping and growing fruit trees.
Mr. Bortz was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Carol Bortz of Arizona; two grandsons, Barry Bortz, Apple Valley, Minn.; and Brian Bortz and his wife Lanelle, Durham, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Shannon Bortz, Amanda Bortz, Brendan Bortz, and Josephine Bortz; and one step-granddaughter, Cassandra Mendez of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Brent Bortz and Lynn Bortz.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Ron DeVore officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to service time, with the family receiving friends from 10 a.m. to service time, on Saturday at the funeral home.
