Virgil Gene Maser, 80, died July 28 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born May 1, 1933 in Bazine, he was the son of Fred and Hannah (Apple) Maser. On May 16, 1952 he married Linda Croft in New Mexico. She survives. A resident of Great Bend since 1958, coming from Hutchinson, he was a farmer and previously managed the Senate Hotel. He had also owned and operated Virgos Café, Granny’s Kitchen, Star Lite Supper Club and Jayhawk Cafe.
Mr. Maser was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Isis Shrine, and was inducted into the Kansas Bowling Hall of Fame in April 2008.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Maser, of the home; four sons, Michael Maser and wife Mary of El Paso, Texas, Daniel Maser and wife Caroline of Great Bend, Kim Maser and wife Shirley Schwartz of Seward, and Benjamin Maser and wife Marisa of Hutchinson; and four daughters, Cindy Rogers of Rush Center, Laura Straub and husband Travis of Great Bend, Sandra Geschwentner and husband Brent of Mulvane, and DeAnna Inglese and husband Santo of Palm Harbor, Fla. He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Jeannie and Janet; a brother, Duane Maser; and two sisters, Geraldine Kating and Betty Ruth Wilhelm.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Brown’s Grove Cemetery in Burdett. Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Great Bend High School to benefit the Bowling Program, in care of the funeral home.
