Ellinwood VFW will continue

Dear Editor,
I would like to address the rumor that the Ellinwood VFW is closing.
Although the building may not be able to be saved, the veterans’ organization is still alive and well. It is unfortunate that the word “VFW” represents “a bar.”
The Ladies’ Auxiliary even has members who are not going to continue their membership because we will not have a bar.
This is so unfortunate that they do not believe in working for their veterans.
So, the next time you hear about the good work that the VFW and Auxiliary are doing, be assured that we are here to support our veterans and their families in any way possible.
Let us know if we can do anything for you or your veteran, or if you would like to know more about how you can join our team.
We would like to hear your opinions on what we are doing right or wrong.
Diane Hill,
secretary/treasurer,
VFW Post 5657,
Ellinwood

scales of justice
Sometimes, when law enforcement agencies announce someone has been arrested or charged with a crime, they mention that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. This principle places the burden of proof on the prosecution to show that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s an important reminder because sometimes a person is arrested but never formally charged or a different charge than originally reported is filed. Other times, the case goes to court and the person is found not guilty. Still other times, the charges are filed but the case never goes to court because the case is dropped.
