Outstanding volunteerism

Dear Editor,
The success of the Friends of the Great Bend Public Library book sale is due to a long list of volunteers: the Friends of the Library who sort books, Great Bend Public Library and Central Kansas Library System staff who helped set up the books, and especially the volunteers from CPI who moved more boxes than ever from storage to the book sale room. We are grateful to Fred and Russell at the library and the Barton County College Basketball team for moving the boxes of books after the sale.
We appreciate the help from the Great Bend High School volunteers, City Workers, Sunflower Diversified, Great Bend Tribune and our radio stations. This project takes many people to be a success, and we thank all of the people who donated books to the library all year and also for everyone attending this year’s sale.

scales of justice
Sometimes, when law enforcement agencies announce someone has been arrested or charged with a crime, they mention that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. This principle places the burden of proof on the prosecution to show that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s an important reminder because sometimes a person is arrested but never formally charged or a different charge than originally reported is filed. Other times, the case goes to court and the person is found not guilty. Still other times, the charges are filed but the case never goes to court because the case is dropped.
