The Barton Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams will be competing in an early-season tournament for the third straight weekend when they host the Barton Classic on today and Saturday at Kirkman Activity Center.
The Barton women will look to bounce back against Fort Scott, a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Eastern Division foe, today at 5. The Lady Cougars lost to Crowder College 67-62 in Neosho, Mo., on Tuesday night.
BCC’s head coach Darin Spence has steered his team to an 8-4 record in his first season at the school.
Barton is led by Dionne Harris, who averages 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Shea Shoemaker is also averaging in double figures with 10.8 points per game.
Friday’s action will begin with a matchup between Independence’s and Brown Mackie’s women.
The Barton women will face Indy, which has eliminated the Lady Cougars from the NJCAA Region VI tournament the last four years, on Saturday at 5.
The Barton men entertain Fort Scott tonight at 7.
Cougars head coach Craig Fletchall has led his Cougars to an unbeaten start in 12 games.
The Barton men are coming off of a pair of wins last weekend at the Hesston Basketball Classic, beating Hesston 92-83 and Northern Oklahoma-Enid 92-72.
The Cougars are led by Dwayne Brunson, who averages a double-double with 19 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
Freshman guard Algie Key is right behind him with 18.2 points per game for a high-scoring offense that has already broken the century mark five times this season.
Friday’s men’s action begins with Pratt facing Brown Mackie. Pratt will meet Fort Scott at 3 on Saturday.
The Barton men will play Brown Mackie on Saturday.
