DODGE CITY — The Barton Community College women’s basketball team traveled to Dodge City looking for its first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference win.
The Lady Cougars (11-5 overall, 1-1 KJCCC West) found it with a 71-64 victory, but it wasn’t easy.
“Dodge City is much improved,” Barton head coach Darin Spence said. “Coach (Lucas) McDonald is doing a really good job with this team. We did a good job early on. We shot well, but we had 19 turnovers in the first half.
“It is hard to do anything when you turn the ball over that much. You can’t score. We were shooting 40 percent in the first half, and we were behind 29-26 at halftime.”
The Lady Cougars finished with 27 turnovers in the game.
A 21-0 run propelled Barton in the second half.
“We got clicking,” Spence said. “We were defending better. When you get more effective on defense, you play offense better.”
Raven Anderson, who went 1-for-11 from the field against Seward on Wednesday in her first game on the court with Barton, scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Blair Bloomfield hit 6 of 7 shots from the floor to finish with 12 points and Shea Shoemaker hit all four of her shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, and totaled 11. Erin Copeland had three 3s and finished with nine points.
Je’nae Strong led the Lady Conquistadors with a game-high 27 points.
