Barton wrestling earns two firsts, two seconds at Dan Harris Open
spt CougarHead2C

The inaugural season was a tremendous success for the Barton wrestling program.
If the first meet of year two is any indication, more success is on the way for Coach Mike Bammes and his Cougar wrestlers.
Barton won a pair of weight divisions and took a pair of runner-up efforts at the Dan Harris Open to start the 2016-17 season.
“This was a good season opener for us,” Coach Bammes said. “It give us coaches a chance to look at what we need to work on and correct in our practices with each individual.”
The Cougars ended the day with an overall mark of 35-27.
Barton was strong at several of the weight classes including going 1-2 at 285, 1-3-4 at 174 and 2-4 at 133.
Brix Brickley defeated teammate Forrest Lalaguna at the 285 division. Brickley won by fall in all three matches leading up to the final where he beat Lalaguna in a sudden victory, 3-1.
Lalaguna won his semifinal match in a close 3-2 win over Ben Melton of Drury.
Barton had three wrestlers place at 174 with David Kelly picking up first place honors. Kelly won by fall over two of his four opponents, including the championship match over John Hughes of Baker.
Trent Miles defeated Devon Baker in an all Barton third place match. Miles’ only loss of the day was in the second round to Hughes. From there he won by fall three straight matches before his 8-2 win over teammate Baker.
The Cougars were also strong at 133 where Caysen Smith took second and Cody Liles fourth.
Smith rolled through the semifinals with a bye and a pair of major decisions. In the semifinals Smith defeated Demone McClinton of Pratt by a 7-5 score. Smith lost in the finals to Tyler Dickman of Baker.
Liles lost in the semifinals to Dickman then fell in the third place match to Ty Kolterman of Bethany, 8-4.
Barton will return to the mat tonight in Warrensburg, Mo. against Central Missouri and Wentworth Military Academy.
“We are looking to compete and get better every time out on the mat,” Coach Bammes said.
