Aviators sweep Bat Cats for first place

HAYVSILLE – The first-place Haysville Aviators finished a 2-game Jayhawk Collegiate League sweep of Great Bend 15-5 Thursday as the Bat Cats played their worst baseball game of the season.

The Bat Cats (5-3) failed to take full advantage of 14 hits and 20 baserunners. Great Bend hit into a pair of double plays. Jesse Ponce was thrown out attempting to steal second base trailing 12-4.

Great Bend's Kyler Horsman singled three times, scored twice and reached base four times. Cooper Smith singled three times and drove in two runs. Christian Ammann singled in a run and reached base three times.

Haysville started with a 5-run first inning and scored 12 runs in the first three innings. Jackson Bell drove in four runs with four singles. Brock Lulewicz drove in three runs with a single and double. Luke Westerman singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

AVIATORS 8, BAT CATS 7 – The Haysville Aviators drew 10 walks and six runners reached on hit-by-pitches that led to a wild 8-7 victory over the Great Bend Bat Cats in Wednesday’s Jayhawk Collegiate League showdown. Haysville (7-2) takes over first place over the Bat Cats (5-2).

Bat Cats reliever Julio Heredia was spectacular, recording five outs with three strikeouts. Ponce threw out Westerman to end the eighth inning. The Bat Cats hurt their cause when Ammann and Ponce were thrown out at the plate.

Carson Lorch’s second-inning single scored Horsman, but Ammann was thrown out by right fielder Brendon Fry.

Jhett Creel’s seventh-inning RBI double scored Lorch, but Ponce was thrown out by shortstop Price Bender. Smith followed with an RBI single that would've scored Creel and cut the lead to 8-7 had Ponce not been thrown out.

The Aviators scored eight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings thanks to seven walks and two hit batters.  Seventeen baserunners reaching base without a hit was too much for the Bat Cats to overcome.

Haysville's Fry scored on a fourth-inning wild pitch and Riley Schrader and Isaac Short scored on bases-loaded hit batters.

A 3-run Aviator fifth inning started with two walks and an error. Isaac Short delivered a 2-run single. Cody Moore and Fry walked and scored in a 2-run sixth inning. Riley Schrader singled home Moore and Fry scored on an error for an 8-4 lead.

Great Bend's Lorch capped a perfect 2-for-2 night with two walks and three runs scored when Ponce drove him home with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.
